5 Reasons to Hire a Wedding Videographer (Even Though You Think You Don’t Need One)
I get it. Weddings are expensive. You’re just thankful you could find a venue, photographer, and caterer on the date you wanted that (hopefully) didn't break the bank. If you’re reading this, I’m boldly assuming one of three things about you:
You don’t think you need a videographer… but you just want to make sure.
You’re kinda into the idea of a videographer, but you’re not sure if you can justify it.
You’re really excited to book your wedding videographer, and you want to know what to look for.
Just so you know - I’m writing from the perspective of a wedding film editor, but this list isn’t the generic “videos say so much more than photos!” post. That’s obvious, right? So here are 5 not-so-obvious reasons you might consider hiring a videographer for your wedding day.
1.Videographers help you get more out of your photographer.
I already know your photographer is probably amazing. We work with a lot of awesome photographers, and they are truly experts in their craft! However, their craft is still images. Videographers offer a different perspective. Your gorgeous portraits don’t always make for good film moments because our eyes naturally crave movement! So your videographer will be there to guide you for more movement-oriented poses. We love to make our couples laugh, act candidly, hold, and hug, and kiss each other… Not only will those make your film special, but you’ll get some really unique candid shots out of your photographer, too!
I first thought of Emily and Justin’s film because their venue was just so beautiful. I wish I could share it with you and encourage you to go there, but it was in someone’s backyard by the lake! We just let them be themselves with the gorgeous lake and sunset in the background. This clip of them spinning each other around made for a gorgeous still shot, but it made for a really epic moment in film. Click here to watch their entire film!
2.You can hold onto moments with loved ones.
I know it sounds grim… and fairly obvious, but our loved ones don’t last forever. It’s happened on a few occasions where past brides and grooms reach out to request raw footage of loved ones when they pass away. Those moments are so special. Don't get me wrong - photos are great. But there’s nothing like watching your grandfather dance with her granddaughter, hearing a speech or prayer from your favorite aunt, or rewatching dad cry blubbery tears as he sees his daughter in a wedding dress for the first time.
3.You get to see your day from all angles…even what you miss!
A friend of ours didn’t have a wedding videographer. She expressed some regret, and the reason why shocked me. I had never even thought about it before! She described how a great friend of hers performed a musical piece during her ceremony, but it was before she came down the aisle. She could faintly hear it from where she was “hiding”, but acknowledges that she basically missed it and will never get to hear it again.
It got me thinking of all the other moments you miss on your wedding day! We hear over and over that the day “flies by”, and our couples can’t wait to see their film just so they can relive it again. But our cameras are the eyes and ears of your day. We capture your moments, but we also capture the moments around you. Were you catching up with an old friend while someone was doing the worm on the dance floor? Don’t worry. Your videographers will have you covered!
4.You can hear your wedding day again.
Reliving the day and seeing it through photos is one thing. Hearing it is completely different. Our memories get muddy with age, but videos don’t lie. Videos capture those voice cracks while you choke down tears during a private vow, the gasp he makes when he turns around during the first look, the giggles when you whisper, “Is this the right hand?” when putting the ring on during the ceremony, the sound of your loved ones as they give speeches, wish you congratulations, or cheer for your grand exit. Plus, when you’re old and gray, you can hear yourselves again. Our visual senses are overloaded, but there’s nothing like hearing the sounds from that day again.
5.You can relive the feelings you had on your wedding day.
I can tell you to book a videographer a million times over, but nothing is more convincing than hearing it from the couples themselves. Let me tell you a little bit about Grace and Brendon. They got married in their early 20’s and have been together since middle school. YES. MIDDLE SCHOOL. When they inquired with us, Grace sent us a TikTok video she liked of a couple’s wedding film that incorporated a photo reel with pictures throughout the years of their relationship. We took it a step farther and incorporated them into their whole film. Plus, they added on an engagement videography package, which added another personal touch to their film. If you want to watch their film, you can check it out here. However, this was how they reacted when they watched it. Full on blubbery tears as they recounted their story and got to relive their day through film.
Wedding videography is about telling YOUR story. We just flash our little logo at the end. Otherwise, you don’t know we’re there. Reactions like Grace and Brendon’s are so special to us because we know their film will follow them throughout their marriage. I’d only book a wedding videographer if you want your day and your memories to be captured in an extra-special way.
